More detail about Haiti
Haiti
Haiti has recently been in the news after the mammoth earthquake of scale of 7.0
on the hit it, in 2010. The little country is still recovering and a few more
years has been estimated for its coming back to life like before. The country
was indebted completely, and they took a long time to clear off the debts.
However, after the earthquake in 2010, Haiti was spared from paying all the
debts, and now it is spending huge amount to recover. The high rate of
corruption is another evil that Haiti has been engulfed by. Even the political
elite personalities are engaged with high level of corruption.
Although this country is into mining copper, bauxite, marble, calcium carbonate
and gold, the economy of Haiti is mainly based on agriculture, and that too
small scale subsistence farming. Haiti is the poorest state of America with a
very low rate of economic growth every year. However, you might find it
interesting to know that when Haiti was under the French dominance, it used to
one of the world?s richest and also most productive colony.
The story had a twist when Haiti gained freedom and they were forming their
consolidation. During this time, Haiti had to make a payment of 150 million
francs to the French. This drained out a lot of capital from the country. This
payment was made till 30 years after the completion of which Haiti was almost
left with nothing. This was also an impediment that came in the way for which
foreign investors dared not to invest in the country.
The constant political cataclysm that Haiti had been subjected to for a long
period of time has also prevented the tourists from choosing it as one of the
holiday destinations. Haiti worked on this sector and started doing fair, but
the 2010 earthquake attack messed everything up again. Along with the recovery
Haiti also needs to build a number of hotels and have the infrastructure so that
it encourages the tourists to go there.
