Eczema contrary to popular beliefs and widespread misconceptions is not just a uniform disease of the skin with one set of symptoms that can be experienced on the skin surface. The skin conditions between different types of eczema vary to a great extent. As for etymology the word eczema is originally a Greek word which means 'boil over' presenting the swelling, red hot symptoms on the skin surface in most of the cases. Let us now have a look at the clinical factors associated with it and then the symptoms of eczema.

Clinical description

According to medical explanation of the terminology eczema refers to the variety of skin condition that causes inflammation, swelling, itchiness of the skin with a wide array of symptoms. Eczema just cannot be defined with a particular set of signs and clinical factors that are responsible for its onset and according to the varied range of symptoms of eczema it can be classified into several types that we would discuss here. Some of the common types of eczema which are found among most diagnosed cases include atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, xerotic eczema and seborrhoeic dermatitis. A few of the less common types of eczema as per diagnostic information include dyshidrosis, discoid eczema, venous eczema, neuro-dermatitis, etc. Let us now have an understanding of how this medical condition develops in variant cases.

Though the cause and contributory clinical factors leading to eczema have largely remained unknown we can at least have a look at the common factors present in different cases of eczema. Atopic eczema is mainly an allergic disease that occurs mainly due to autoimmune malfunction. This eczema is common in people who in their families have someone suffering from asthma, as various studies have indicated. Irritant contact dermatitis or simply contact dermatitis is particularly the type of eczema that is caused from coming to contact or being exposed to environmental toxins. Xerotic eczema is when the dry skin condition becomes so severe that it becomes cracked throughout and causes inflammation. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is the type of eczema that made the skin peel off as scales crusts and this eczema is more close to another medical condition called dandruff.
