Symptoms of Constipation


Constipation is one of the most common health problems that for large part remain mostly undiagnosed and medically unattended as most people tend to consider it a typical irritable syndrome rather than a grave health concern. Symptoms of constipation consists of mainly the irregular and irritable bowel movement and though this immediately does not make us suffer from any grave health outcomes in the long run it can cause great array of symptoms including indigestion, gastritis, metabolic problems, liver problems, stomach upset and many more. Constipation is increasingly being associated as one of the contributory factors to several diseases and health malfunctions. Let us see now the clinical description of constipation before we get into explaining the symptoms of constipation.

Clinical description

Almost everyone in some point of time in their life gets affected by constipation, yet few would really like to talk about it openly even when he or she suffers from the symptoms of constipation regularly. Constipation clinically speaking is nothing but the difficulty experienced in bowel movement or irregular bowel movement that causes the person to carry the toxic substances within his body longer than usual. Obviously these toxic substances affect our digestive process and in turn our whole metabolic system as well. Normally at least one bowel movement per day is the natural rate of bowel movement and less than that is obviously regarded as constipation. Some people, particularly who experience as fewer as three or four times of bowel movement in a week have much severe constipation and should undergo treatment as their bowel movement becomes more difficult with harder stools caused by fewer bowels movement.

Apart from various medical disorders common factors that contribute to the development of constipation in most cases include mostly daily lifestyle habits that have a derogatory effect on our digestive process and bowel movement. Inadequate water intake, inadequate intake of dietary fiber, sedentary lifestyle without any routine or diet, lack of exercise and physical movement, stress, lack of rest, are just some of the common aspects that play immense role in making us victims to the symptoms of constipation. Hypothyroidism, medicinal reactions especially use of anti depressants can also cause constipation.

Clinical symptoms

Constipation manifests in the following symptoms:

  1. Difficulty in passing stools.
  2. Dry, hard and lumpy stools that can be abnormally small or large in shape.
  3. Stomach ache and cramps is another symptom that is experienced by people suffering from constipation.
  4. Feeling bloated and nauseous is also experienced as one of the symptoms of constipation.
  5. Loss of appetite or hunger is a regular symptom of constipation.
  6. Passing foul selling wind occasionally or almost regularly.
  7. Pain in the abdomen and feeling uncomfortable.
  8. Feeling irritable and getting angry quickly.
