Damascus, Feb 24(ANI): The United Nations has accused Syria of perpetrating crimes against humanity, indicating that President Bashar al-Assad should be prosecuted. inquiry commission told the UN Human Rights Council that it had compiled a confidential list of those "up to the highest levels" who had ordered the shooting of unarmed women and children, the shelling of residential areas and the torture of wounded protesters in hospital.
Its findings came in the wake of Western and Arab League diplomats and Syrian opposition figures working on proposals to put pressure on President Bashar al-Assad to step down.
According to a leaked draft declaration of one proposal, the meeting will call on Syria to implement an immediate ceasefire to allow aid groups to deliver relief supplies to areas worst hit by the violence, The Telegraph reports.
It also "recognised the Syrian National Council as a legitimate representative of Syrians seeking peaceful democratic change".
Meanwhile, Tunisia's presidential spokesperson said the host country would propose a political solution to the crisis involving a peacekeeping force.
Over 7,000 people are believed to have been killed since the uprising erupted against Assad's regime 11 months ago. (ANI)
