Each year on April 07, the world celebrates World Health Day. This year, the world observes it by keeping focus on measures to protect human health from the occurrence of drastic climatic changes due to global warming that has been swiftly damaging the environment across the globe.
Several world-wide programmes have been organised to spread awareness taking paramount care to ensure a safe environment as climate has had direct and indirect effects on human life.
The 2008 World Health Day also coincides with the 60th anniversary of World Health Organisation (WHO) as on April 07, 1948, the organisation was founded as a specialised agency of United Nation and hence chosen the theme “Protecting Health from Climate Change”.
As per everybody’s concern any abrupt climate changes with the growing temperature of planet earth could lead to the re-emergence of certain diseases including high level geographical changes, which had broad impact on human life and health.
With rising temperature intense storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, droughts and floods could generate sudden consequences and such emerging challenges demands all countries to work together and here comes the key role of WHO as the prime international body to draw nations together and attract worldwide attention for such a common and vital cause.
Environmental degradation has a direct impact on human life as any sort of climatic change certainly affects water resources, food production which is directly proportional to health. As per latest reports of WHO epidemics like diarrhoea, malaria along with protein-energy malnutrition caused more than 3.3 million deaths globally in 2002.
In addition climatic change also has been a major concern as it spreads communicable and infectious diseases with the displacement of animals and human from one place to other thereby placing health system under increase stress.
Though climatic change is a natural process but has been affected by our own deed in terms of air pollution and, use of land and water resources.
The organisation has so far been successful in its movement by inducting new guidelines related to global health issues and initiating various health programmes in association with individual national governments for the overall improvement in health care and by providing fairer access to health services.
The World Health Day hence marks and reminds all to contribute in developing an improved strategy for an early solution to this global warming and the risk associated to human health due to its affects.
