Pak's nuke facilities second-least secure after North Korea: Study

Washington, Thu, 12 Jan 2012 ANI

Washington, Jan 12(ANI): A study has ranked Pakistan's nuclear facilities the second- least secure after that of North Korea.

The index complied by the Nuclear Threat Initiative project led by former US senator Sam Nunn and the Economist Intelligence Unit aims to highlight the security of the world's nuclear facilities.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative index ranked North Korea as having the least secure nuclear material, and listed Iran, Vietnam and India below the 50 threshold on the scale of 100.

The index listed Australia as having the tightest security controls among nuclear nations followed by Hungary, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

"This is not about congratulating some countries and chastising others. We are highlighting the universal responsibility of states to secure the world's most dangerous materials," The Express Tribune quoted a Democrat, Nunn, as saying.

"We know that to get the materials they need, terrorists will go where the material is most vulnerable. Global nuclear security is only as strong as the weakest link in the chain," he added.

The index, which comes ahead of South Korea nuclear summit called on the world to set benchmarks for nuclear safety.

It also urged nations to stop increasing stocks of nuclear material and to make their security regulations public. (ANI)
