Washington, Jan 6 (ANI): American senators John McCain, Joseph Lieberman and Mark Kirk have expressed concerns over the treatment meted out to former Pakistan ambassador Husain Haqqani since he has returned to his home country in the wake of the Memo Gate probe.
Haqqani had resigned from his post as Pakistan's Ambassador to the US in December 2011 after American businessman Mansoor Ijaz alleged his involvement in the "memogate" scandal.
Haqqani is currently on the Exit Control List, and is facing trial in the Pakistan Supreme Court, The Express Tribune reports.
The senators urged Pakistan to "prevent the judicial commission investigating Ambassador Haqqani from becoming a political tool for revenge against an honorable man," and urged the swift conclusion of the Memo Gate probe.
The senators pointed out that Haqqani had served Pakistan honourably in his role as a diplomat.
"While we did not always agree with Ambassador Haqqani, and our exchange of views could be spirited at times, we always had the highest respect for him and knew he was serving his nation and government with patriotism and distinction," a US statement said.
We regret that the Pakistani people have lost a tough-minded, eloquent, and principled advocate for their nation's interests now that Ambassador Haqqani has departed Washington," the statement added.
Haqqani, who had earlier expressed fears about his security, is staying at the prime minister's house in Islamabad since his return to Pakistan. (ANI)
