Washington, Jan 2 (ANI): Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich has launched one of his harshest attacks on rival Mitt Romney, saying the former Massachusetts governor would "buy an election if he could."
The former House speaker took a jab at Romney while fielding questions from the press on Sunday, Politico reports.
According to the paper, trying to argue for his own viability should Romney win Iowa and New Hampshire, Gingrich said Romney would have spent almost as much per vote in 2008 and 2012 as New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg did in his campaigns.
"Romney would buy the election if he could," Gingrich said when asked if Romney was trying to do the same.
Meanwhile, Romney has re-established himself as the favourite contender to win the Republican presidential nomination, with aides claiming his victory is now inevitable, as Gingrich's polling numbers have plunged.
Romney is enjoying a resurgence in his poll numbers across the nation and in Iowa.
According to an aggregate of polls by RealClearPolitics, Gingrich has seen his support in Iowa plummet from 31 to 15 per cent in just over two weeks,
Romney is sitting in second place in the state on 21 per cent behind Republican Dr Ron Paul, a climb of three points over the same period. (ANI)
