Islamabad, Dec 24(ANI): Former Pakistan military officer and defense analyst Ikram Sehgal has warned that the government's attempt to remove army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani could lead to a military mutiny because the latter has little faith in the country's civilian authorities.
Gilani's statement indicating that conspirators were plotting to topple him had "strengthened the military's conviction" that the government was involved in the Memo Gate scandal, he added.
A former Pakistan People's Party senator Enver Baig echoed his view, with the New York Times quoting him, as saying: "Things don't look stable at all."
His statement came after General Kayani denied the possibility of a military coup to topple the country's government.
"The army will continue to support democratic process in the country," General Kayani had said.
He added that the rumour of a military coup was being "used as a bogey to divert the focus from the real issues," but stressed the Pakistan army would not "compromise on national security."
Tensions between the Pakistan government and army have escalated over the Memo gate scandal and deadly November 26 NATO airstrike in the country's Mohmand Agency.
Kayani reportedly cancelled a meeting with the United States Central Command chief General James N. Mattis, which indicates further worsening of Pak-US ties.
Pakistan Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, however, said he would not authorise any military coup in a sign of relief for government. (ANI)
