Indian American Nikki Haley under scanner for endorsing Romney's 2012 White House bid

Washington, Dec 17(ANI): Indian- American South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has come under the scanner for endorsing former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for the 2012 White House bid.

Romney's campaign is using Haley's endorsement in South Carolina to secure the support of the Tea Party, which had never been comfortable with his candidacy.

The Tea Party members, who had been instrumental in Haley's 2010 victory, criticised her move as an attempt to abandon them, Politico reports.

Haley's Facebook page was flooded with accusations of selling out her principles after she announced Romney's endorsement.

Tea Party leaders said the move would cost Haley in the 2014 primary unless she won a post in Romney administration.

"The overwhelming sense that I get from talking to people is deep betrayal. She's not going to be able to come back from this with the tea party. If there's anybody credible who will run against her, I believe the tea party will support them whole-heartedly Spartanburg tea party founder Karen Martin said.

Winthrop Poll Director Scott Huffmon said Haley has already lost much of her tea party support since she won the 2010 primary.ea Partiers who back Romney said Haley's endorsement has a significant short-term risk.

"Short term, people who follow politics in South Carolina won't like it, I don't think. Long term, the only impact it will have is for her possibly being a nominee for vice president," Aiken County Tea Party founder Colen Lindell said.

Haley, however, countered the allegations saying that Tea Party would eventually realize that her decision was wise.

"I have a great respect for the members of the tea party and what I know is all South Carolinians make the decision that's best for them," Haley said. (ANI)
