Beijing, Dec 15(ANI): China has vowed to "severely punish" people leading the Wukan rebellion in Lufeng City, Guangdong Province, which has entered the fifth day.
Chinese Police have cordoned off Wukan following a series of protests over the villagers' land sold off to property developers.
Shanwei county's acting mayor Wu Zili said the Chinese Government would restore peace and order in Wukan by taking "the merits of the villagers' demands into consideration but warned "the authorities will firmly crack down on anyone who organises and incites the villagers"
Zili identified two villagers, Lin Zulian and Yang Semao, as leaders of the protests.
"Since December 8, Lin Zulian and Yang Semao organised and incited the villagers to set up barricades around the village. They did this to prevent officials from entering the village and to stop the perpetrators of the earlier riots from leaving the village and turning themselves into the authorities," The Telegraph quoted him, as saying.
Zili said 1,000 armed police personnel tried to enter Wukan to rescue 60 hotel guests who had been trapped behind the village's barricades.
Semao said he was in an extremely dangerous position but villagers' interests were paramount.
The government appears to be pursuing divide and rule strategy by being lenient to some people, while punishing others to crush the rebellion.
Zili said the local party disciplinary commission has approved "the relevant investigation" involving two former village leaders, Xue Chang and Chen Shunyi.
He added that the property project that sparked off the protests has been "temporarily frozen", and would be re-initiated only if it was backed by the majority.
"We have published all of our actions on our website. We will continue to publish any further updates on our website," a Lufeng propaganda office spokesperson said. (ANI)
