London, Dec 11(ANI): The Cutty Sark's masts have been raised for the first time since the ship was destroyed by fire in 2007.
The vessel is being restored and is set to open in April 2012 after being gutted by fire on 21 May 2007
The Cutty Sark is one of only three remaining original compound construction (wooden hull on an iron frame) clipper ships from the 19th century.
A crane was used to lower the ship's foremast in Greenwich, south London.
The final mast of the ship is expected to go up on December 11.
"It's extraordinary that we have got here five years on from when we took the first plank off and today we are stepping the masts. It's the moment when you erect the masts and today we are going to be putting in the foremast and the main mast. It's thrilling," The Mirror quoted Cutty Sark Director Richard Doughty, as saying.
Doughty's daughter, Katrina would place a coin in the hole, where the main mast will be secured, as a sign of good luck.(ANI)
