Algiers, Sun, 11 Dec 2011 ANI

Algiers, Dec 11 (ANI): Algeria has reportedly refused to allow American and French drones to fly over its southernmost desert areas to target smuggling of weapons from Libya.

Algeria is also planning to increase air surveillance operations by reconnaissance drones; a local newspaper, El Khabar report quoted a security source, as saying.

The source said a unit of French and American reconnaissance aircrafts, who were based in a secret location in Libya, were controlling certain routes suspected of being used for trafficking, Xinhua reports.

As a consequence, the U.S. and French reconnaissance aircrafts flew over Libya's border with Algeria, Niger and other North African countries. (ANI)
