Sanaa, Dec 10(ANI): New Yemeni coalition government was sworn in on Saturday before Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi as part of a deal designated to end months of protests against outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
"The new government was sworn in before Vice President Hadi in the Republican Palace," an official of Hadi's office told Xinhua.
The 34-member cabinet is headed by independent politician Mohamed Basindwa.
Saleh had transferred his powers to Hadi last month. The creation of the national unity government was also part of the deal.
According to reports, the cabinet posts are equally divided between Saleh's governing General Congress Party and the opposition.
Members of the Congress Party head the ministries of defence, foreign affairs and oil, while opposition politicians lead the ministries of interior, finance and information.
The cabinet also includes two women, one from each side.
Basindwa is a former member of the Congress party and held several cabinet positions, including Foreign and Information Minister before leaving about 10 years ago to become an independent opposition figure.
Hundreds of people have died this year in protests against the rule of Saleh, who has governed for more than three decades.
Early elections are scheduled to take place on February 21, 2012. (ANI)
