Canberra, Dec 10(ANI): New South Wales(NSW) Premier Barry O'Farrell has given the green signal for uranium exploration after the Australian Government lifted the ban on exporting nuclear fuel to India.
The NSW Government would review "hangover legislation from the 1970s", which prohibits uranium searches, for allowing its mining.
"The NSW government will have a look at that ban on uranium exploration," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted O'Farrell, as saying.
The Australian Labor Party conference had earlier lifted a ban on uranium exports to India, and indicated that the Gillard Government would soon negotiate a bilateral safeguard agreement with New Delhi.
Australia's Resources Minister Martin Ferguson had earlier called on the NSW and Victorian governments to consider lifting the ban on uranium exports.
The Victorian government, however, rejected calls for uranium exploration.
The NSW Government said the uranium deposits might exist around Broken Hill.
The industry believes the potential size of the uranium deposits in NSW is similar to those in Western Australia.
"We don't know whether there is any uranium in NSW so it may come to nought. But we should at least be prepared to work out what resources we have across the state and then have a mature and sensible discussion about whether those resources should be exploited for public good," O'Farrell said.
