Ex Japan's Fukushima nuke plant chief suffering from esophageal cancer

Tokyo , Sat, 10 Dec 2011 ANI

Tokyo, Dec 10(ANI): Former Japan's Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant chief is suffering from esophageal cancer, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) has said.

TEPCO ruled out that Masao Yoshida's cancer was caused due to the nuclear crisis since he was exposed to 70 millisieverts of cumulative amount of radiation since the crisis.

The utility added that Yoshida showed no signs of esophageal cancer during his regular medical check-up in autumn of 2010, The Japan Times reports.

Tepco cited National Institute of Radiological Science Director Makoto Akashi, as saying that the incubation period of esophageal cancer is between five and ten years.

The statement came after Yoshida visited the Fukushima No. 1 plant and spoke about his illness to counter media speculation that his health might adversely morale of plant workers and their families.

Tokyo Institute of Technology's Research Laboratory for Nuclear Reactors' Associate Professor Yoshihisa Matsumoto said there was no link between Yoshida's cancer and the nuclear disaster since he was exposed to meagre amount of radiation and was diagnosed with the disease within a short span of time since the crisis.

TEPCO said Yoshida did not desire to disclose further details about his illness.

Yoshida stepped down from his post on November 14 on health grounds. (ANI)
