Doha, Dec 6(ANI): Qatar- based Virgin Megastores has removed copies of Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" from its recommended reading list after an American communications executive posted a photograph of it on Twitter.
The book disappeared from shelves within a day after Charles Gandelman tweeted "Mein Kampf's next stop: Oprah's Book Club."
Gandelman said his friend, who had already contacted the firm but did not receive any response from the company, had brought the incident to his notice.
"I have seen it being sold in places everywhere, and that's not objectionable. But I thought it was quite shocking to see Adolf Hitler's manifesto promoted in a British branded store like this," The Telegraph quoted, Gandelman as saying.
Virgin Megastores said individual stores were responsible for the books they promoted.
"Recently, one of the region's Virgin Megastores included in its book section the Arabic translation of Mein Kampf, by Adolf Hitler, a title available worldwide in major bookstores and online," a Virgin Megastores statement said.
"For one day, the book was included in the recommended section. The recommended tag was not an endorsement of the book's author or its content. In response to a customer, we removed the title from the display," it added.
Adolf Hitler's book is banned in several countries, including Germany and Austria.
Its popularity in the Middle East reflects greater acceptability of anti-Semitism and brings to the fore complex issues stemming from ignorance and denial of Hiltler's Holocaust policy that led to the genocide of Jews. (ANI)
