Yangon, Dec 4(ANI): Myanmar has approved a new law for the first time, which allows citizens to request permission for staging peaceful protests.
Myanmar President Thein Sein signed the new legislation after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton undertook a three-day visit to the country.
According to the new law, staging a protest requires approval from police five days prior to the event, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The law empowers police to deny permission for staging protest but they must give the reason for turning down the request.
The move is a part of reforms undertaken by the country's nominally civilian government to liberalize previous regime's hard-line policies, since it assumed power from a military junta in March.
Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi had earlier lauded series of reforms as representing the biggest opening in the country since the 1980s.
The earlier regime had banned demonstrations, and cracked down on such protests. (ANI)
