Melbourne, Dec 4 (ANI): A new potion being marketed as the number one hangover cure drink in Europe has been blasted by alcohol and road safety groups over fear that it will encourage drink-driving.
The so-called "pick-me-up" Security Feel Better went on sale in Australia last week, with its website promising users will feel the effects within 45 minutes.
According to the potion's Sydney-based marketing director, Michael Romm, the French-made drink, based on artichoke extract, contained an enzyme that helped break down alcohol in the liver five times faster than the body on its own.
He said while he had not yet had it scientifically tested, he believed it had the potential to lower blood alcohol levels within the hour.
"There's a possibility if you have one or two beers, it might get you below the limit in 45 minutes," News.com.au quoted him as saying.
"What this does is it goes to your liver and it makes your liver produce more of that enzyme, so it breaks down the alcohol five times as fast," he said.
John Crozier, deputy chair of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' National Trauma Committee, said he had serious doubts the new drink would work, but he was more concerned that consumers would interpret it as safe to take the product after drinking and get behind the wheel.
Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia's Paul Dillon said it was dangerous for marketers to be making such claims. (ANI)
