'West expecting Pak-based insurgents to stoke civil war in Afghanistan after NATO exit': Report

Kabul, Sun, 04 Dec 2011 ANI

Kabul, Dec 4 (ANI): Western nations are expecting Afghanistan to collapse into civil war after NATO troops leave the war-torn country, secret military documents have revealed.

Although governments have publicly expressed hope to stabilise the nation's democracy, the leaked memos suggested that they are preparing for the worst, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the paper, intelligence documents drawn up by the US and German militaries state that, "when the ISAF troops leave the country, there will be civil war."

The documents, published by Bild, Germany's biggest newspaper, predict that when western soldiers have left, insurgent leaders based in Pakistan 'will return to Afghanistan', and in the vacuum left behind by NATO forces a bloodbath will ensue.

Bild also claimed that the documents contain 'indications' that the Afghanistan intelligence service had take part in attacks on German soldiers and that German weapons had been found in the hands of Taliban guerillas.

According to the paper, the Bild revelations are the first time that such high-level doubts about the future of the country have been aired.

The documents come at a time when western politicians are trying to prepare Afghanistan for a withdrawal of NATO troops in 2014. (ANI)
