London, Nov 30(ANI): The United Kingdom has evacuated its diplomatic staff from Iran after two of its diplomatic compounds in Tehran were ransacked.
"The Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary have made clear that ensuring the safety of our staff and their families is our immediate priority. In light of yesterday's events and to ensure the ongoing safety, some staff are leaving Tehran," the Telegraph quoted a Foreign Office spokesman, as saying.
When asked how many staff were leaving or if the embassy was going to remain open, he added: "We do not comment on our contingency plans and we will make any announcement about our embassy and staff at the appropriate time."
Earlier, on Tuesday, Iranian protesters had stormed British diplomatic compounds, hauling down the Union Jack, torching an embassy vehicle and pelting buildings with petrol bombs in what began as an apparent state-approved show of anger over the latest Western sanctions to punish Tehran for defiance over its nuclear program.
The hours-long assault on the British Embassy and a residential complex for staff could push already frayed diplomatic ties toward the breaking point. (ANI)
