Melbourne, Nov 30 (ANI): Melbourne has overtaken Sydney to be voted Australia's best city in a survey of travellers.
The survey of more than 1000 readers of Australian Traveller magazine found Melbourne was the favoured city for its sporting events, shopping and laneway cafes and bars.
Destination Melbourne chief executive Chris Buckingham said Melbournians would enjoy the "warm inner glow" that comes with gaining national acknowledgement at the awards, which were announced in Sydney.
"For more than a hundred years Melbourne was seen as Australia's second city. People like coming to Melbourne because we are a welcoming destination that celebrates cool and accepts difference," The Courier Mail quoted him, as saying.
"We love the validation that comes from the millions of visitors that grace our streets every year," Chris said.
Sydney claimed the awards for best restaurant, best bar, best tour and favourite place for a weekend getaway.
Margaret River in Western Australia was recognised for its wineries, restaurants and farm gates, as well as its rural charm and fierce surf breaks. (ANI)
