Tokyo, Nov 29(ANI): The on-site crisis manager of the Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, Masao Yoshida has decided to resign on health grounds, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co.(Tepco) has said.
The company, however, refused to disclose the ailment citing confidential reasons, but said there was no indication that his health problems were caused due to exposure to radiation.
Yoshida had been unable to report to the plant for the past two weeks and is hospitalised, the company said.
"I was told by a doctor to stay in the hospital to receive treatment. I regret having to leave the on-site headquarters at this crucial juncture," The Wall Street Journal quoted Yoshida, as saying.
Yoshida's departure comes in the wake of the plant's damaged reactors being brought under full control and kept at low temperatures to achieve a safe shutdown.
Tepco's nuclear management division Director Takeshi Takahashi will take over as new manager for December 1.
Yoshida had taken over as manager in June 2010 and was considered instrumental in preventing the worsening of nuclear meltdown following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
"His departure will be a terrible shock to all of us, but we will continue to work together" to bring the plant under control, a Tepco spokesperson Junichi Matsumoto said.
Some workers at the plant have been relieved of their duties due to radiation exposure over the permitted limit of 250 millisieverts. (ANI)
