Medvedev says Russia will deploy missiles to counter NATO proposed missile system

Moscow, Thu, 24 Nov 2011 ANI

Moscow, Nov 24(ANI): Russia can deploy missiles on its western and southern borders to counter a NATO missile defence system in Europe if the United States refuses to comply with Russian demands over the system, President Dmitry Medvedev has warned.

"The Russian Federation will deploy modern offensive weapon systems in the west and south of the country, ensuring our ability to take out any part of the U.S. missile defense system in Europe," the ABC News quoted President Medvedev, as saying.

The missile defense shield, including advanced radar systems and interceptor missiles, would be deployed at land and sea locations in Europe in 2020.

He said NATO must inform in writing about how missile system's specific legal provisions would work.

Medvedev has issued four orders to his military- putting a radar early warning system on "combat alert," equipping some missiles with "advanced missile defense penetration systems," and developing measures to overlook the e defense guidance systems as a response to the US measure.

He warned that Russia could also consider withdrawing from the latest START treaty should the US continue to ignore Moscow's demands.

He, however, said Russia was open to discussing its concerns with NATO.

The US National Security Council described Russian allegations as baseless, and claimed that the system would protect nations against missiles from Iran.

Though Washington vowed to cooperate with Russia on security issues, council spokesperson Tommy Vietor said: "In pursuing this cooperation, we will not in any way limit or change our deployment plans in Europe."

A NATO spokesperson described Medvedev's threats as "not helpful," but "welcomed" his willingness to continue discussion on the issue. (ANI)
