India and UAE to sign agreements for exchange of prisoners, security cooperation

Dubai , Wed, 23 Nov 2011 ANI

Dubai, Nov 23 (ANI): India and the UAE will sign two major bilateral agreements for exchange of prisoners and security cooperation today in New Delhi.

The signing of the agreements will take place during the official visit of Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, who reached New Delhi on Tuesday.

The negotiations on "India-UAE agreement for transfer of sentenced persons" was concluded between the two countries a few months ago, M.K. Lokesh, the Indian Ambassador to the UAE, told reporters in Abu Dhabi.

Among the 1,200 Indian prisoners in the UAE jails, those who have been sentenced will have a choice of spending the remaining part of their prison term [if it is more than six months] in India, he said.

The second agreement - "India-UAE agreement for security cooperation" - will cover all security-related matters, including the sharing of intelligence and expertise to prevent terrorism and cyber crimes, The Gulf News quoted Lokesh, as saying.

There is already an extradition treaty between both countries, and people arrested in criminal cases, are exchanged regularly by formal and informal channels, he said. (ANI)
