Civilian supremacy must end military high-handedness in Pakistan: Editorial

Islamabad , Sun, 20 Nov 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Nov 20(ANI): A leading Pakistan editorial has stressed the need to end the high- handedness of military regime and allow a strong civilian set-up to prevail that would ultimately lead to civilian supremacy. Daily Times editorial says that the activities of military and intelligence forces should be accountable to parliament instead of blaming the political class for all the ills.

The editorial stresses the need of fair probe in the Memogate scandal and supports Pakistan Muslim League- N(PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif's suggestion that a high level committee comprising civil society members, senior judges and members of the national and provincial assemblies should investigate the issue.

"The need of the hour is for all democratic forces to unite and demand that the military be subservient to the civilians, as it should be as per our constitution," the editorial says.

"Economic crisis, intolerance, persecution of minorities, sectarian conflict, ethnic wars, 'kill and dump' policy being pursued in Balochistan, terrorism - both internal and external - are all but the result of this power imbalance between the civilians and the military establishment," the editorial adds.
