Bali, Nov 20(ANI): The United States has described China's attitude on the South China Sea territorial dispute as "constructive", after talks between President Barack Obama and Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the East Asia summit in Indonesia.
The meeting came in the wake of Obama focussing on increasing US influence in the Asia Pacific region, where China wields enormous power.
Beijing is currently embroiled in territorial disputes with the US allies, including the Philippines and Taiwan, over island groupings in the South China Sea.
US National Security Adviser Tom Donilon said the "informal meeting" between Obama and Jiabao centred around "specific issues around business practices" and currency controls.
Donilon said though the United States did not have a view on sovereignty on the South China Sea, it wanted the shipping lanes to remain open, the BBC reports.
"We don't have a claim, we don't take sides in the claims, but we do as a global maritime power have an interest in seeing these principles applied broadly," he said.
Jiabao had earlier warned "external forces" to not intervene in the maritime dispute.
The Chinese media reacted sceptically to the US attitude towards the country.
"If the United States sticks to its Cold War mentality and continues to engage with Asian nations in a self-assertive way, it is doomed to incur repulsion in the region," a Chinese news agency was quoted, as saying. (ANI)
