Melbourne, Nov 17(ANI): The mother of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has used US President Barack Obama's visit to Australia to call on the government to lobby the US to not extradite him.
Christine Assange said that she wants the Australian government to stand up for her son's "legal and humanitarian rights" and to differentiate itself from American foreign policy.
"This case is not just about Julian. We are at a crossroad in history here with democracy, where Internet technology is intersecting with democracy," the Herald Sun quoted Christine, as saying.
"Which way are we going to go? Are we going to repress all the citizens of the world for speaking out?" she added.
Last month, Julian Assange had lost a British High Court appeal against extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations.
The 40-year-old Australian-born Journalist fears that authorities in Washington will seek his extradition from Sweden to face charges relating to his website's publication of thousands of classified US government documents. (ANI)
