London, Nov 13(ANI): London's St James's Palace will be rented out to companies for upto 30,000 pounds per day during the 2012 Olympic Games, marking a break with nearly 500 years of royal tradition.
The palace, which is still the official residence of the Sovereign, is generally closed to the public.
The Queen has personally approved the plans to rent out the palace's three rooms.
According to the hire plan, firms will be able to invite guests to events in the Tapestry Room, which boasts an original Tudor fireplace, Throne Room, which contains a single throne for the reigning Monarch and Queen Anne Room, which is dominated by a portrait of George III.
"The Palace is exploiting its historical heritage and its prime location. Officials have already begun contacting firms and charities who they think might be interested in using the Palace," the Daily Mail quoted a source, as saying.
"The response so far has been very good and the word is that there are hardly any dates left to hire," he added.
A spokesman declined to give details of fees or the organisations that had booked the palace.
A historian and broadcaster, David Starkey said opening the Palace to the corporate world was inevitable.
"I have attended charity functions at the Palace and it is ideal for this sort of entertaining.
We are in an age where everything is up for sale so we should not be surprised when the Monarchy jumps on the bandwagon," he said. (ANI)
