Damascus, Nov 9 (ANI): The death toll in Syria since anti-government protests erupted almost eight months ago has reached upto 3,500, the United Nations has claimed.
Ravina Shamdasani, a spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that over 60 people were reportedly killed by Syrian security forces since Syria signed a 'peace plan' sponsored by the Arab League.
She said the latest tally also included 19 killed on Sunday during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The UN figures are conservative and based on "credible sources on the ground" though the agency itself has no one posted in the country, Shamdasani added.
Despite increasing international pressure, President Bashar al-Assad still has a firm grip on power and has shown no signs of moving to stop the crackdown on the uprising, blaming the bloodshed on "armed gangs" and extremists acting out a foreign agenda to destabilize the regime.
According to activists, over 110 people have been reported killed in the past week in the Homs, Syria's third-largest city, including more than 40 from Baba Amr. (ANI)
