'Fanatical' militant leaders blocking polio vaccinations in Pakistan: Gilani

Perth , Sat, 29 Oct 2011 ANI

Perth, Oct 29(ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has warned that some militant leaders in his country would not allow polio vaccines to be distributed.

Pakistan is one of four nations where polio is still endemic, and Gilani said he was determined to eliminate it, but added that some radicals were blocking the campaign.

He pointed to the influence of the extremist elements in the areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border who were preventing administration of the vaccine.

"And so fanatical they don't let even the doctors to visit those areas," Australia News Network quoted Gilani, as saying.

However, the Pakistan Government was negotiating with the people in those areas to accept the vaccine, he added.

Gilani said his government was seeking help of the religious scholars to convince the "fanatics" about the importance of vaccine, the APP reported.

Pakistan was launching a three-day campaign every three months to administer anti-polio drops to 33 million children across the country, he added. (ANI)
