Japan Govt., police probing cyber attacks on key installations

Tokyo, Thu, 27 Oct 2011 ANI

Tokyo, Oct.27 (ANI): A string of cyber attacks on Japan's Parliament, government ministries and some overseas embassies have raised questions about the adequacy of Japan's computer security, although officials say no confidential data have been lost in any of the attacks.

Police are investigating the alleged hacking of a computer server at the lower house of Parliament.

Computers at several Japanese embassies overseas also have been the targets of cyber attacks, receiving emails with virus attachments that have infiltrated the foreign ministry's servers, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quoted an information-systems official at the ministry, as saying on Wednesday.he announcement follows Tuesday's revelation that the trade and industry ministry has been targeted by computer viruses.

While the government has been keen to play down the impact of the cyber attacks, the growing intensity of attempts to break into government and legislative computer systems suggests an urgent need to address their vulnerability to hackers.

"Cyber attacks are becoming increasingly aggressive. We will have to improve our information-sharing across organizational lines of control," said Hiroya Izumi, an official at the security center. (ANI)
