Washington, Thu, 27 Oct 2011 ANI

Washington, Oct 27 (ANI): The wife of 'Ponzi king' Bernard Madoff has said that they tried to commit suicide after the fraud scheme was exposed.

During an interview Ruth Madoff said that she and Bernard were so distraught over the burden of those crimes that they took a "bunch of pills" to end their lives.

"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," CBS news quoted Madoff, as saying.

"We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said '...I just can't go on anymore," she added.

Ruth recalled that they took those pills, some of them Ambien and possibly some Klonopin, on the Christmas Eve, and avoided drinking alcohol to prevent vomiting.

"I took what we had, he took more. That added to the whole depression. But the pills didn't work. We took pills and woke up the next day, It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up," she added.

Madoff was sentenced to 150-year in jail after being convicted in 2009 for running a 'ponzi scheme', which deprived thousands of investors of their savings.

Through that scheme, Madoff swindled over 65 billion dollars. (ANI)
