Libyan Govt. orders probe into Gaddafi's killing

Tripoli , Tue, 25 Oct 2011 ANI

Tripoli, Oct 25 (ANI): Libya's interim leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil has ordered an investigation into the death of Muammar Gaddafi under pressure of the international community.

Jalil's orders were issued as new video surfaced of a man claiming to be Gaddafy's killer. There are allegations that fighters for the new regime might have been responsible for the execution of a group of the deposed dictator's supporters.

"We grabbed him. I hit him in the face. Some fighters wanted to take him away and that's when I shot him twice - in the head and in the chest," the New York Post quoted the fighter who identified himself as Senad el Sadik el Ureybi, as saying.

The pressure on the TNC increased Monday, with calls from a human rights group for a separate probe into the death of over 50 pro-Gaddafi supporters it claims were executed at a hotel in Sirte during the final uprising last week.

Human Rights Watch said the area surrounding the hotel was a stronghold of anti-Gaddafi fighters.

"We found 53 decomposing bodies, apparently Khadafy supporters, at an abandoned hotel in Sirte, and some had their hands bound behind their backs when they were shot. This requires the immediate attention of the Libyan authorities to investigate what happened and hold accountable those responsible," the group's Emergencies Director, Peter Bouckaert, said.

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that volunteers have cleaned up the Mahari Hotel compound, one of the worst massacre sites in Libya, where a number of Gaddafi loyalists and at least two officials were killed, but no one from the new government had reportedly come to investigate the spot.t is however unclear whether anyone found guilty would be held accountable, as Jalil had earlier claimed that the youth who had declared to have shot the former dictator, if proven right, would in fact be treated like a hero.
