Romney, Obama clash ahead of 2012 presidential polls over Iraq troop pull-out

Washington , Sun, 23 Oct 2011 ANI

Washington, Oct 23 (ANI): Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential front-runner, has attacked President Barack Obama over his announcement that all US troops would be brought home from Iraq by the end of the year.

The withdrawal seems certain to become a major campaign issue next year as Republicans seek to undermine the president's recent run of foreign policy and security breakthroughs.

Obama's opponents are seeking to portray him as a wavering commander-in-chief whose pull-out from Iraq will pave the way for greater Iranian influence over its neighbours, also predominantly Shia Muslims.

"President Obama's astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition in Iraq has unnecessarily put at risk the victories that were won through the blood and sacrifice of thousands of American men and women," The Telegraph quoted Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and businessman, as saying.

"The unavoidable question is whether this decision is the result of a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude in negotiations with the Iraqi government. The American people deserve to hear the recommendations that were made by our military commanders in Iraq," he added.

The Obama campaign hit back, saying Romney's foreign policy experience is limited.

"Mitt Romney's foreign policy experience is limited to his work as a finance executive shipping American jobs overseas," Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for the president's re-election team, said.

"The President kept his pledge to the nation to end the war in Iraq in a responsible way. Mitt Romney didn't lay out a plan to end the war in Iraq in his foreign policy agenda - he barely even mentioned Iraq - but he is apparently willing to leave American troops there without identifying a new mission," he added.
