Islamabad, Oct 19(ANI): Members of Pakistan's National Assembly have sought action against parliamentarians holding dual nationality.
Speaking on a point of order, Former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that a National Assembly or Senate member could not possess dual nationality under the Constitution.
Seeking the ruling of the chair in this regard, Qureshi said that the Senate Chairman and the National Assembly Speaker should refer the matter to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) parliamentarians Amir Muqam and Raza Hiraj endorsed the point of order of Shah Mehmood Qureshi and sought ruling of the chair on the issue, The Nation reports.
PML-N leader Rana Tanvir also said that many dual-nationality parliamentarians are members of both Houses from last three years, which is in sheer violation of the Constitution.
Raza Hiraj was of the view that dual-nationality holders should stand disqualified from election.
On it, chief whip Religious Affairs Minister Khursheed Shah said that the sense of the House could not be taken on this matter.
"We don't have dual nationality holders," he added.
In his support, Minister for Water and Power Naveed Qamar said that this was discretion of the Supreme Court, and 'we can discuss, not interpret it'. (ANI)
