Canberra, Oct 12 (ANI): A small enclave of racist and nationalistic extremists are capable of doing damage and causing a possible threat to Australia's security, the nation's intelligence organization has claimed.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) said in a report that, "there exists a persistent but small subculture of racist and nationalist extremists in Australia, forming groups, fragmenting, re-forming and often fighting among themselves."
According to the report, Australian citizens attracted to Jihadist terrorism pose the most immediate and real security threat to the country.
"Local racist and nationalist extremists maintain links and draw inspiration from like-minded overseas extremists," the report said.
"Where such confrontations have occurred, the 'anti-fascists' have outnumbered the nationalist and racist extremists and police intervention has been required," it added.
According to Xinhua, the report said cyber-espionage was another priority for investigation during 2010/11.
"The traditional methods of espionage remain the backbone of the threat, but these have been joined by capabilities exploiting new technologies and the vulnerabilities they bring with them," the report said.
The ASIO, however, said it has developed a new analytical technique to help identify international activities that may lead to violent extremism within Australia.
The tool aims to draw insightful linkages, patterns and trends to identify information gaps and inconsistencies, and determine proportionate assignment of investigative attention and resources, the organization said. (ANI)
