Gucci's "sweatshop" Chinese store under scanner for maltreating employees

Beijing, Tue, 11 Oct 2011 ANI

Beijing, Oct 11(ANI): Italian brand Gucci has come under the scanner after five former employees of China's Shenzhen flagship store publicly released an open letter claiming that the company was a "sweatshop".

The workers also alleged that they had maltreated at Gucci's Shenzhen outlet, adding they had to work overtime without getting fair compensation and even had to obtain permission to drink water or go to the washroom.

According to the China Daily, they claimed that due to overtime and late nightshifts, one pregnant saleswoman had had a miscarriage, the China Daily reports.

The company's outlet shuts at 10 p.m. but workers stayed back till 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. to conduct inventory checks.

The letter also claimed that Gucci's staff salaries were cut by over 70,000 Yuan (11,111 dollars) when 16 items in their charge were found to have disappeared from 2009 to the end of August.

"Gucci gets double compensation (from its staff and the insurance company) when its products are stolen or lost," Xinhua quoted a worker, as saying.

Gucci China declined to comment on the case, and said the company is investigating the accusation.

Shenzhen-based Dacheng Law Firm lawyer Yang Qianwu encouraged the city's labor supervision department to take steps to protect workers' legal rights and interests.

Shenzhen Trade Union Rights and Interest Protection Department's Deputy Director, Wang Hongli said many international companies barred their employees from forming unions, making it difficult for union officials to collect evidence to resolve labour disputes. (ANI)
