Kuala Lumpur, Oct 9(ANI): Malaysia has abolished school fees and provided 100 ringgit assistance for all poor Indian students at the primary and secondary school level.
Malaysian Indian Congress Youth Chief T. Mohan said this financial assistance would ensure the welfare of poor Indian families.
"We hope this gesture will help reduce the number of school dropouts among the Indian community," The Star quoted him, as saying.
He also said 100 million ringgit assistance for renovation of dilapidated Tamil schools was inadequate.
"There are too many schools in bad condition," he said, adding some schools were operating in temporary premises.
Malaysian Associated Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry President K. K. Eswaran said the budget would help ease the financial burden on low- and middle-income families.
"Although some may call it an election Budget, it is actually a people's Budget. The Prime Minister has also placed importance on women's role by proposing a special hospital for them and children, providing free HPV vaccination as well as funds for women entrepreneurs," he said.
Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Indian Chambers of Commerce Secretary-General A. T. Kumararajah said the 100 million ringgit allocation under the largest micro-credit scheme Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia would be beneficial to the Malay Indian community. (ANI)
