Melbourne, Oct 9 (ANI): An Indian taxi driver in Melbourne, who bashed an 81-year-old woman in his cab, has escaped deportation and will be allowed to stay in Australia.
Twenty-four-year-old Bhupinder Singh, who came to Australia on a student visa, was handed a nine-month suspended jail sentence for punching 81-year-old Zainab Sarwari several times in the face and tossing her from his cab on August 14 last year.
Despite Singh's guilty plea to counts of false imprisonment and intentionally causing injury, he still passed the national character test and will not face deportation.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed authorities had investigated the option of cancelling Singh's visa.
"We did contact immigration in relation to this man's visa, but, unfortunately, the circumstances did not fit the requirements for visa cancellation," the Herald Sun quoted her, as saying.
Meanwhile, Crime Victims Support Association president Noel McNamara said the sentence 'was a disgrace'.
"The whole thing is a shemozzle and the sentence was disgusting," McNamara said.
"Instead of being made an example he got a walk-away sentence for bashing an 81-year-old woman. If anyone is here on a visa and they get into any sort of trouble that involves violence, out you should go," he added. (ANI)
