London, Oct 8(ANI): The UK Government is planning an eight billion dollar high-speed rail service linking London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports to maximise air capacity.
According to the early proposal, the high- speed trains would run on the M25 motorway route every five minutes between the two airports.
Supporters of the "Heathwick" plan argued that it would create the world's first "virtual hub" between two airports and provide a quicker and cheaper means of transport to resolve capacity crisis at airports.
They said the plan would allow London airports to compete more effectively with large European airports by expanding air capacity, the Herald Sun reports.
The plan would form a part of UK Government's aviation policy review, which is examining how to expand air capacity without overlooking green targets.
"Anything that has the potential to distribute demand for access to London's airports when capacity is constrained has to be a good thing. We would be very pleased to discuss the idea further with ministers," a Gatwick airport statement said.
"A virtual hub between Heathrow and Gatwick faces insurmountable technical, operational, political and financial challenges, and would take many years to deliver. It provides no extra runway capacity in the South East, which is the key problem identified by the Department for Transport's own passenger forecast," an airports' operator, British Airport Authority statement said.
