Washington, Oct 7 (ANI): ESPN has parted ways with American country singer-songwriter-cum-musician Hank Williams Jr. after he compared President Barack Obama to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler during a TV interview, but the singer says that he quit willingly.
Both ESPN and Williams have taken credit for the decision of not using his classic intro to 'Monday Night Football,' anymore.
"After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision," the Daily Mail quoted Williams, as saying in a statement.
"By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It's been a great run," he added.
However, ESPN claimed that it has parted ways with the musician, and that it informed him about the move.
"We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years. The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue," the network said in a statement.
On Monday's 'Fox and Friends', he likened the President's recent golf outing with Republican House Speaker John Boehner to "Hitler playing golf with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu."
Following the controversy over his comments, Williams issued an apology, saying: "I have always been very passionate about Politics and Sports and this time it got the Best and Worst of me." (ANI)
