Pakistan must revisit foreign policy, adopt positive approach toward neighbours: Experts

Islamabad , Fri, 07 Oct 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Oct 7(ANI): Pakistan must revisit its foreign policy, adopt a positive approach towards its neighbours and should focus on its internal development instead of meddling in others' affairs, the participants of a conference have recommended.

The conference, titled "Transition in Afghanistan: Post-Exit Scenarios", was jointly organised by the Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in Islamabad.

The participants were of the view that the Afghan conflict needed to be approached through a regional perspective, the Daily Times reports.

However, the regional context did not mean including only regional countries, but the inclusion of regional as well as trans-regional countries that had interests in Afghanistan.

The moot recommended that the United States must figure out how to reduce its centrality to the conflict in Afghanistan.

The US needs to have crystal clear objectives that it wants to achieve, they said, opining that building of democratic institutions in Afghanistan is vital for a stable Afghanistan following the troops withdrawal by 2014.

Given the geographical position, thinking of development in Afghanistan without help from Islamabad has to be re-considered, as Pakistan has a lot of infrastructure and human resources to help reconstruct Afghanistan, they added.

The moot further recommended that Pakistan should assert primacy in its tribal areas and it can use military means, take political steps, and offer economic opportunity.

The experts were of the view that Pakistan has to come with a positive thinking, as a positive and comprehensive approach is the answer. (ANI)
