Melbourne, Oct 6 (ANI): Rail workers in Queensland, Australia, have been ordered not to wear coloured underwear after the introduction of new uniforms that are almost see-through.
The Station Service Manual sets out guidelines for Queensland Rail staff including the instruction "coloured undergarments must not be worn under blouses or shirts as this can create an unprofessional appearance."
Staff members said it was not an issue before the introduction of the new uniforms in April, which are made from flimsy, near transparent fabric.
Australian Service Union branch secretary Kath Nelson said if the uniforms were made with "appropriate material" the issue of underwear would not have arisen.
"Workers should be free to choose their own undergarments," the Courier Mail quoted Nelson as saying.
"If an employer wants to dictate what a worker wears they need to pay for it, (but) what needs to be considered here is the appropriateness of the fabric," she said.
But Queensland's Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said staff were mostly happy with the new uniforms which she described as "very smart" and defended the directive a "common sense approach."
"I think this is just a common sense policy, it's been around in Queensland Rail for the last ten years," she said.
"Women will do the right thing in relation to this. I would urge that if anyone does have any concerns, they should approach Queensland Rail and discuss it with them," she added. (ANI)
