London, Oct 2 (ANI): Two Iranian lovers were driven to commit suicide by their country's regime after being imprisoned for being friends with a human rights activist.
According to the Daily Mail, Behnam Ganji, 22, was imprisoned for eight days at Evin Prison in Tehran, and Nahal Sahabi, 28, was in for three days, and they both committed suicide after being released.
Ganji was a science student at the Tehran University and lived with his close friend and human rights activist Koohyar Goudarzi, 26.
Goudarzi, a member of the Committee for Human Rights Reporters (CHRR) had been previously arrested in demonstrations following President Ahmadinejad's re-election in 2009, and was being banned from attending university.
On their hunt for Goudarzi, security agents thought to be from Iran's ministry of intelligence, burst into the men's flat and arrested both him and his flatmate Ganji.
They were both taken to Evin prison on July 31, followed by Sahabi and Goudarzi's mother being arrested shortly after.
According to one of Ganji's friends, he was beaten by interrogators in the prison and was forced to falsely condemn Goudarzi as a member of the MEK, a criminal opposition
The student is said to have become depressed and committed suicide in his flat on September 1 with an overdose of prescription drugs.
Sahabi, a kindergarten teacher, was apparently not as traumatised as her boyfriend after being released by interrogators, but lived in constant fear of rape after guards threatened to 'dishonour' her, the paper said.
Later she was also found dead at her parents' house in Tehran after taking an overdose of drugs.
According to the paper, various bloggers across the nation have voiced their views on the tragic tale. (ANI)
