Beijing, Oct 1 (ANI): China has called for a boycott of Internet-based rumours, referring to them as "malignant tumors", which threaten social stability.
A State Internet Information Office spokesperson called on China's Internet users to "abide by the law, show self-discipline and refrain from spreading rumors."
The spokesperson ordered local authorities to penalize defaulters in accordance with the law, Xinhua reports.
The spokesperson urged Internet firms and websites to "strengthen the management of information publication" and urged the public to give tip-offs on online rumors.
He also condemned false "prostitute diary" incident, where a married man, writing under the pseudonym "Ruoxiaoan1" fabricated stories on his Weibo account of working as a female prostitute.
China's websites have launched campaigns to check the spread of false and harmful information.
