Sharif tells ISI: 'Where there is smoke, there is fire' following Haqqani-link allegations

Islamabad, Fri, 30 Sep 2011 ANI

Islamabad, Sept 30(ANI): Some participants of the All Parties Conference (APC) reportedly demanded a detailed explanation from Pakistani military authorities vis-a-vis recent American allegations related to the Haqqani network's safe havens in North Waziristan and the militant group's links to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Recently, the United States has sharply warned Pakistan that it must cut ties with the Haqqani network based in its tribal region along the Afghan border, and help eliminate the terror outfit's leaders.

Some leaders, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif, questioned the military authorities at the APC and asked them to explain the exact security situation of the country vis-a-vis recent US accusations, The Express Tribune reports.

"Where there is smoke, there is fire," some APC participants quoted Nawaz, as saying while asking ISI chief Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha for a detailed explanation, according to the paper.

The situation is said to have prompted Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to intervene and assure the PML-N: "We will respond to all of your queries".

After the meeting, Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI-S) chief Maulana Samiul Haq said that the political leadership of the country had rejected allegations of the United States, and had "put their weight behind the army".

Haider Abbas Rizvi of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) said that the internal situation of the country was thoroughly discussed during the course of the meeting.

"In order to have a firm foreign policy, a strong internal policy is needed," he added. (ANI)
