London, Sept 27 (ANI): A shipwreck holding silver worth more than 150million pounds has been discovered in a ship sunk 70 years ago near Ireland.
The 200-ton haul - the largest amount of precious metal ever found at sea - was discovered in a former British merchant ship sunk by a Nazi submarine in 1941.
SS Gairsoppa was travelling home from India when it was hit by a torpedo 300 miles south-west of Ireland.
The wreck was found this month with the help of an underwater robot used by Odyssey Marine Exploration.
The company will get to keep 80 per cent of the cargo's value under a Department for Transport contract.
The recovery, planned for next spring, would be the deepest in history and make it the largest retrieval of sunken treasure.
"We were fortunate to find the shipwreck sitting upright, with the holds open and easily accessible," the Sun quoted Greg Stemm, CEO of Odyssey, as saying.
"This should enable to us to unload cargo through the hatches, as would happen with a ship alongside a cargo terminal," he added. (ANI)
