China reiterates staunch opposition to US arms sales to Taiwan

United Nations, Tue, 27 Sep 2011 ANI

United Nations, Sept 27(ANI): Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has once again urged the US to immediately withdraw the arms sales proposal to Taiwan.

Jiechi reiterated China's stance on US arms sales in a meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly debate, Xinhua reports.

He said the US' decision of arms sales to Taiwan contravened the three Sino-US joint communiqu?s and August 17 Communique principles, threatened China's security and thwarted its efforts to foster peaceful Sino-US ties.

"China urged the US to attach great importance to China's solemn position and take it very seriously, correct the mistake of selling weapons to Taiwan by revoking the above-mentioned wrong decision, eliminate its negative influence, stop arms sales to Taiwan and US-Taiwan military contact, and take real actions to uphold the larger interest of China-US relations," Jiechi said.

The US had earlier announced a 5. 852 billion dollar arms package to Taiwan, including F-16A/B fighter jets "upgrading".

Clinton said her country is determined to expand, deepen and enhance Sino-US ties, and seriously took into account China's stance on arms sales to Taiwan.

"The US welcomes and supports the peaceful development of relations between China's mainland and Taiwan, and will continue to be devoted to promoting peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits," she said.

"The US is willing to properly handle the differences between the two countries and avoid disrupting cooperation between the two sides," she added.

Both sides vowed to strengthen communication and coordination to maintain world peace. (ANI)
