United Nations, Sept 25 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has called on the United Nations to devise a plan to provide relief to the poor in "underdeveloped countries".
Bhattarai was addressing the ongoing annual general debate of the UN General Assembly session.
"Lip-services and symbolic supports are not enough. It is time for a bold visionary step to deal with the complex problems of today. This would be a most cost effective approach to deal with the global problems and ensure sustainable peace," Bhattarai said.
He said since Nepal is the least developed countries (LDCs)' current chair at the UN, his country will support their cause, Xinhua reports.
Bhattarai pointed out 75 percent of the population of the LDCs live in abject poverty, and their situation worsened during global crisis.
"In this integrated world, grinding poverty of the masses in billions is a recipe for disaster. The islands of prosperity amidst the sea of poverty are not sustainable. It is more indefensible and economically undesirable," he said.
"The recurrence of economic and financial crises, fuel and food crises, and the deeper structural crises have vindicated the need to seriously review the current economic paradigm," Bhattarai added.
Bhattarai also urged for the timely implementation of the Istanbul Declaration and the Program of Action, which is aimed at the upliftment of LDCs over the next ten years. (ANI)
